Important news regarding dispensing licences

Dear Colleagues

We informed you in December 2017 and March 2018 that the Medicines and Related Substances Act, Act 101 of 1965 (Act 101), was amended by two Amendment Acts, Acts 72/2008 and 14/2015, as from 1 June 2017.

These amendments include the requirement that veterinarians should obtain a dispensing-, or compounding- and dispensing license (the dispensing licence), which in turn will come into operation on 1 June 2018.

Council, following intense negotiation with the DoH, formally applied for exemption from the dispensing licence requirement, which will come into operation on 1 June 2018, for a period of three and a half years to put the necessary systems in place. The exemption was not granted for technical reasons. The Department of Health (DoH) instead opted to confirm in a letter to Council dated 25 May 2018 (LINK) that the DoH will not implement the dispensing licence requirement for a period of three years commencing on 1 June 2018. The pharmaceutical companies will be provided with a similar letter and the letter will be displayed on the website of the South African Health Products Regulatory Authority (SAHPRA).

Should you experience any disruption in or refusal to deliver scheduled medicines, contact Dinamarie Stoltz at (012) 345-6360 or at 083-632-3904 a/h, who will liaise with the DoH.
